BALTIMORE (AP) — Five Johns Hopkins students have been selected as finalists in a new cancer cure research competition.

The five will compete Friday at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for the $20,000 top prize in the Rangos Medal of Honor competition. The second-place finisher gets $5,000 and the third-place prize is $1,000. The prize is being funded by John Rangos Sr., chairman of the Rangos Family Foundation.

The five proposals will be judged on novelty and scientific merit. The finalists were chosen from 44 entrants.

The competition is designed to find new ways to cure metastatic cancer, a cancer that spreads from the place where it started. All currently enrolled full-time students and trainees at Johns Hopkins University, including undergraduate, graduate and medical students, residents and fellows, were allowed to submit proposals.
