3 Hurt In Carroll Co. Crash, Including Officer

MOUNT AIRY, Md. (AP) -- Three people, including a Howard County police officer were injured in a crash in Mount Airy.

Maryland State Police say the officer was interviewing a man on Route 144 early Sunday when they were hit by a passing car.

Police say the officer, Richard Romberger Jr., 43, had taken Matthew Griffis, 27, of Clarksburg into custody after he left the scene of a crash on Penn Shop Road earlier. They were standing in the eastbound lane when a car driven by Ricky Epperson, 25, of Mount Airy hit two cruisers with their lights activated and the two men.

All three men were flown to Shock Trauma with injuries that aren't thought to be life-threatening.

The Carroll County State's Attorney's Office will review the state police investigation before charges are filed.
