Gallo Leads Coppin State Past Hampton 73-70

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -- Tony Gallo scored 21 points and Coppin State held on to beat Hampton 73-70 Saturday night.

Hampton was ahead 37-29 with 17:33 remaining before an 8-0 run by the Eagles (10-11, 5-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) forced the first of seven second-half ties.

Coppin State took its biggest lead of the game, 53-45, after three free throws and a 3-pointer by Gallo and two layups by Antonio Williams.

The Pirates (7-14, 3-5) used an 8-0 run over the next 2 minutes to tie it at 53 with 6:53 remaining.

Gallo hit seven free throws in the final 3:39, and two by Michael Harper with 11 seconds to play put the Eagles in front 73-70. Darrion Pellum's 3-point try for Hampton missed with 4 seconds remaining.

Harper scored 16 points and Logan Wiens 14 for Coppin State.

Pellum led Hampton with 24 points. Mike Tuitt had 12 points and 10 assists.
