COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County is moving closer to having a high-end Whole Foods Market grocery store that would be part of a mix of housing and retail development in College Park.

The Washington Post reports the county Planning Board approved plans Thursday for the Cafritz family developers to build a complex that would include the store.

The complex also would include a 120-room hotel, 168,000 square feet of retail space, and 995 residential units, along with office space. Officials hope building the new store will send a message to other developers that projects can thrive in the county.

Residents say they welcome Whole Foods but worry the large project could overwhelm roads and schools. The developer agreed to provide a shuttle to the nearby College Park Metro.
