Jury Selection Starts For Western Md. Murder Trial

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Jury selection has begun in Hagerstown for the first-degree murder trial of a schizophrenic drug addict charged with killing his 22-year-old neighbor.

Darrol Sands' lawyer said at the start of the proceeding Tuesday that his client pleads not guilty to all charges.

Sands, 44, is accused in the April 2008 slaying of Carol Brown. The single mother of two was found dead in her bathtub in Hagerstown.

Investigators say Brown was stabbed and asphyxiated. They say Sands' palm print was on the bathtub, and that he had recently had sex with her.

Sands pleaded guilty to cocaine distribution last year. He has publicly acknowledged he has a drug problem and that he has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
