Laurel Police Seek Driver In Hit-And-Run Crash
LAUREL, Md. (WJZ)—Hit-and-run caught on tape. Police in Laurel need your help catching the driver.
Mary Bubala reports that driver fled the scene, not knowing a dash cam on a Metro bus captured it all.
A white truck merged from Route 1 just as a person was walking on the side of the road. The dash cam video captured the white truck veering sideways, and then going up onto the sidewalk and running over the pedestrian.
The truck never stopped.
“Knowing that he hit someone and sent them down an embankment 30 feet, it’s definitely surprising,” said Brad DiPietro, Laurel police detective.
The hit-and-run happened Wednesday on Route 198 in Laurel.
Police released the video hoping the public can help.
They believe the truck is an F-250 pick-up with a super cab and extended bed. They say the model year is 2005 to 2007 and could be someone’s work truck with writing on the door.
And police don’t know who the victim is. He had no identification on him.
“We are really counting on the community in this one to come forward, identify the victim and the driver of the truck,” DiPietro said.
Police say only two motorists stopped to help the pedestrian — a white man between 50 and 60 years old.
And police say had the white truck just stopped, the driver – who clearly lost control – may not be in the trouble he is now.
Police say “100 percent it could have been an accident, but we don’t know because they decided not to stop and continued on,” said DiPietro.
The pedestrian was taken to Shock Trauma with severe head injuries, a snapped femur and a crushed pelvis.
