Priest Who Denied Communion Placed On Leave

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) — A priest who denied communion to a lesbian at her mother’s funeral has reportedly been placed on leave.

The Washington Post reported Sunday that a letter from an archdiocese official says the priest was placed on leave for engaging in intimidating behavior.

The archdiocese has already apologized to the woman for the priest’s actions at the February funeral in Gaithersburg.

Barbara Johnson and her relatives, meanwhile, have asked the archdiocese to remove the priest. The archdiocese issued a statement after the funeral saying the Rev. Marcel Guarnizo’s actions violated policy but any action against him would remain confidential because it is a personnel issue.

Johnson’s family issued a statement Sunday saying the letter doesn’t pertain to the funeral, but they hope the action will ensure others won’t suffer the same treatment.

        So true Mr. Right

  2. CRACKER says:

I BELEIVE THAT A MAN OF THE CLOTH NO MATTER OF WHAT RELIGION HE REPRESENTS SHOULD HAVE THE POWER TO SERVE HOLY COMMUNION TO IF HE HAS KNOWLEDGE THAT THE PERSON IS A SINNER. IF PERVERTED SEX ACT ISN’T PERVERTED THEN THE DICTIONARY NEEDS TO BE REVISED

    1. Marquest Coleman says:

Sorry “Cracker”, but if you are familiar with your bible, we are all sinners. Then we all need to be denied holy communion, according to your logic?

      1. mr.right says:

wrong again, the bible says” if we confess(to turn away ) our sins He (Jesus) is faithful and Just to for give us our sins and to cleans us from all unrighteousness” now some of you dont think that bing gay is a sin. so how can you confess somthing that you think is right? Jesus also told ‘the lady at the well ; ( who had several husbans.) said ” go hd sin no more” he delt with her sin and didn’t over look it!

      2. Wiseguy says:

Mr. Right …..go back to school and learn how to spell.

  3. Trish+ says:

Marquest, well said. We are all sinners so even those among us who believe that committed same-sex relationships are sinful have no biblical claim to put that “sin” above others, like hatred, or gluttony, or judgment, which btw is claimed as the Lord’s alone.

Barbara, I read your experience when it first came to print and support you in challenging the priest’s use of his authority to deny you the sacrament of the Eucharist. I believe that those of us called to ministry are called to embody, to the best of our ability, the spirit and nature of Christ here on earth. This, was not it. When we just don’t know, we are most Christ-like when we err on the side of love, not condemnation.

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, St. Paul tells us clearly..
And in our broken humanity, we are called to hold one another accountable. I support you and your family in doing so, and regret that this offense added to your pain at the time of your mother’s funeral.

  4. W H Campbell says:

I did not believe that a priest can serve the sacrament of communion to anyone who is not in a state of grace. Grace was obtained through confessing ones sins, being remorseful, promising not to commit that sin again, and receiving absolution from the priest hearing your confession. Am I correct? If so how could Father Guarzino give Ms. Johnson communion if he knew that she was not in a state of grace?

  5. I REFUSE TO BE INDOCTRINATED BY LIBS says:

Why is this front page news? It’s a matter for the church to deal with. FREEDOM OF RELIGION applies to the priest too!! I wouldnt have given her communion either!

    1. Kelly says:

I agree why is it that this is a headline? If he doesn’t want to do it he doesn’t have to! I have to agree with the state of Grace. What is going on with our country things are getting much worse.

  6. Larry26 says:

I didn’t think that my first comment would be printed. Too controverial. The priest was justified, but went about it in the wrong way. I know the libs won’t like this.
