Westboro Protesters Met With Opposition Outside Glen Burnie High

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (WJZ)—A controversial church group once again brings its message to Maryland, protesting outside an Anne Arundel County high school.

Mike Schuh has more on why the Westboro Baptist Church is demonstrating and the massive counter-protest.

Traffic near the high school was snarled for many hours. Westboro Baptist Church had a busy day. They picketed at the Pentagon, Arlington National Cemetery and then at Glen Burnie High School.

But in Glen Burnie, they did not receive a warm welcome.

School hadn’t even let out, and Glen Burnie High School was surrounded.

“I think that everyone should have a right to be who they are,” said a counter-protester.

The streets were blocked off. Protestors took their sides: Westboro Baptist Church and their intolerance for homosexuals or the people of Glen Burnie–separated by dozens of officers.

“I would say they’re misguided,” said a counter-protester.

“You cannot allow hate to come into your community without confronting it,” said Chris Panasuk, counter-protester.

Motorcyclists revved their engines in an attempt to drown out the hate.

“They shouldn’t have a right to do what they’re doing,” said Chip, a former Marine.

Around 500 counter-protesters showed up — all for just three members of the Westboro Church.

For a half hour Westboro protesters stood, surrounded by barricades and counter-protesters.

“They thought Noah was crazy too right before the flood of waters. That sent them all straight to hell,” said Shirley Phelps-Roper, Westboro Baptist Church.

“I don’t feel the love of God alive in their hearts,” said a counter-protester. “So in that regard I’d have to pray for them.”

The next protest by the Westboro Baptist Church is in 11 days in Washington, D.C.

Glen Burnie High and police have been planning for this incident since they found out about it nearly a week ago.

westboro members are a bunch of goofs…..its a shame they werent injured, maybe leave maryland and never come back

  2. Ashley says:

My thing is, I saw that there was no reason for them to be at GBHS. They just kind of picked it at random. They should not be able to just randomly pick a school and protest for no good reason.

    1. Larry26 says:

What is their reasoning for anything?

      1. ELIZABETH says:

THIER APPARENT REASON WAS BECAUSE OF THE PRINCIPAL AND THE TECHER THAT SLEPT WITH HIS STUDENTS. tHE PRINCIPAL IS OPENLY GAY.

    2. jeff says:

They were here because they feel that the guy who slept with the students was sent by God to punish these kids. Therefore, when we put him away and called the authorities, we were (in their view) trying to stop God’s judgement.

  3. Rob says:

Funny she should say that about Noah. Noah is from the Old Testament and there’s no hell in the Old Testament. Guess it shows how truly ignorant they are about even their own state of mind. Let them have their free speech and continually be drowned out by louder, saner and more open-minded voices.

  4. Art says:

Way To Go Glen Burnie!!! Great job showing your support!!

    1. pasadizzle says:

Agreed. Way to stand up, Glen Burnie. These people didn’t do their research. Glen Burnie is not a place where these fools are going to protest uncontested.

  5. Carline says:

Many of you don’t get it. They do this, just so that they can say “we were attacked” “we were threatened” and SUE. They’re doing this for money. Remember when another guy in Maryland tried to sue them? Even though I was on his side, it didn’t work out too well. Freedom of speech is a funny thing. We all have it, and sadly they have it too. They use it to manipulate and persecute whoever they see fit. Then sue to keep their lights on.

    1. Larry26 says:

And, the good people of Maryland can counter sue them. I appreciate your sentiments though!

    2. Mikeb says:

      @ Carline

You are 100% right. They only do this to anger people to the point where they physically assult members of the WBC and then the WBC sues. They have a record of frivolous lawsuits. There’s a video on Youtube, Fred Phelps used to be a lawyer and knows how to work the system. Stop giving these jerks attention and maybe they will disappear.

  6. Larry26 says:

I say good on to the People of Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County and the State of Maryland. It showed this evil group from Kansas that there are good people in Maryland to stand up to them and that there are Christians here. Their brand of Christianity should be kept in their own Church. I don’t see any members of their group with a Prophet like Daniel, Elijah, Jonas, or Noah! My biggest gripe with them is how they demonstrate at the funerals of our fallen dead and make obscene remarks. They have no idea if those dear souls died in a State of Grace and Saved and whether they were even Christians or not. The Father does move in mysterious ways!

  7. ChoChiyo says:

Those morons from the West Borough Baptist Church are evil incarnate. I feel sorry for their little children, growing up in such a state of hate and greed. Shirley Phelps, especially, is vile. Her ministry of hate is sickening.

  8. Lou says:

Even Jesus ate with sinners, as we all once were. Jesus came for those who are lost, his is a ministry of love, not hate. These so-called ‘Christians’ are way, way, way, off the mark. Ignore them, don’t give them air time and maybe, just maybe they will go away!!!

  9. Bonnie Snyder says:

IF YOU THE MEDIA WOULD STOP PUTTING THERE UGLY FACES ON THE NEWS AND GIVING THEM THE ATTENTION THEY SO CRAVE THEY MAY JUST GO AWAY. YOU WERE THERE AT THE TRIAL OF MY BROTHER YOU SAW THE PAIN MY FAMILY WENT THROUGH WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO BE THERE ADVOCATE?

  10. pigeon says:

I have nothing but contempt for these people; I am a real Baptist – they are not. I would hope the American Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention, both of whom denied affiliation with these “people”, would take some kind of legal stance against them and their using the Baptist affiliation.
