Md. Driver Unhurt When Tree Falls On Moving Car

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A Hagerstown-area man says he's surprised he wasn't seriously hurt when a tree fell onto the hood of his car as he drove to church.

David Schwartz, 81, tells The Herald-Mail he thought he was going to die when the tree felled by a chain saw crashed onto his Mercedes-Benz Sunday morning.

The car sustained heavy damage, but Schwartz says he only got some glass in his hair. He refused a trip to the hospital.

Police say Russell Pugh of Martinsburg, W.Va., cut the tree.

Pugh's helper, William Pettie, says he ran into the street to try to stop traffic but Schwartz ignored him.

A neighbor who witnessed the event says he saw Pettie run into the street. He says Schwartz's car went around him.
