Just a thought on I’ll Have Another not winning the Triple Crown. The owners held him out and retired him because of a minor leg injury. That’s great that they didn’t put the horse at risk.
That said, and I hate to be cynical, it’s hard for me not to think that this wasn’t a money decision either. I read that, at stud, the horse stands to make at least ten million dollars. That’s 10% for the trainer Doug O’Neil. If the horse produces successful foals, there is even more money to make. I wonder if they would have been so quick to retire the horse if he was a gelding?
Once again, I applaud the connections of I’ll Have Another for retiring him rather than risking a potential life threatening injury; that said, I don’t dismiss the influence of making a sound business decision at the same time.
