FREDERICK, Md. (AP) — Army officials say they hope to reduce Fort Detrick’s reliance on the electrical grid by installing solar panels on an undeveloped part of the installation in Frederick.

The Frederick News-Post reported Thursday that Detrick is among four posts involved in a renewable power plan announced last week by an Army task force.

Detrick will install 15 megawatts of renewable power over the next 18 months. The electricity will come from solar panels on 65 to 75 acres in a section called Area B.

A task force spokesman says Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Irwin, Calif., will each install a 20-megawatt project. He says the
Schofield Barracks in Hawaii will get a 50-megawatt biofuel project.
