BALTIMORE (WJZ)– It’s a crime that shocked a community. A man murdered and then his killer confesses to eating some of the victim’s organs.

Monique Griego reports on the tribute being planned for that victim.

Friends are hoping to raise enough money to return the victim back to his family in Ghana.

The gruesome way 37-year-old Kujoe Agyei-Kodie was killed rocked communities around the world and left his family and friends devastated.

“It’s sad. Very, very sad that this happened. Nobody could have seen this coming,” Thomas Mwaura said.

Mwaura was not only Agyei-Kodie’s friend, he knew 21-year-old Alexander Kinyua, a Morgan State University student now widely known as the Maryland cannibal.

Police say Kinyua admitted to dismembering and eating Agyei-Kodie, who was his roommate.

The horrific crime unfolded last month in Harford County.

“These are things you see in a horror movie and stuff like that. Not people you know, you’ve spoken with,” Mwaura said.

Agyei-Kodie was from Ghana but had become close with the local Kenyan community Mwaura is apart of.

That’s also how he met Kinyua.

Community members will hold a memorial in Agyei-Kodie’s honor Saturday morning.

The memorial will be held here at All Saints Gospel Church on Pulaski Park. Friends hope by bringing people together, they’ll be able to raise enough money to return Agyei-Kodie to his family in Ghana.

“We want them to know that we are with them in this. And we are doing what we can to help,” Mwaura said.

Kinyua, who is charged with first-degree murder was recently transferred to a Maryland mental hospital for evaluation.

While Mwaura is still coming to grips with what happened, he’s now focused on giving his friend the burial he deserves.

“He became part of the community. That’s why it’s so important, so important to do for him,”

The memorial service will be held at 9600 Pulaski Park Drive, Suite 115, Middle river, MD 21220 on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.

Financial contributions are also being accepted for burial arrangements. The checks can be written to: Mr. Joseph Sigei, 7251 Glenthome Rd., Upper Darby, PA 19082.

Contributions can also be deposited at TD Bank (PA), ACCT # 373513621 or PayPal account: jokisi@hotmail.com.
