Prince George's Co. Fire Department To Hire New Firefighters

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- The Prince George's County fire department says it's using a multimillion-dollar federal grant to hire new firefighters.

The department says the $2.6 million grant will pay for the hiring of 18 new firefighters.

The funds come from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant program. Congress created that fund to make sure fire departments had adequate staffing, equipment and training.

The department received a similar grant two years ago.

An additional 30 firefighters will be hired under the county's fiscal 2013 budget.
