ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — Ritchie Highway is shut down after an accident involving a tanker.

According to officials, a tanker truck holding 8,000 gallons appeared to be making a left turn onto southbound Ritchie Highway from Route 10 around 3 p.m. Tuesday. The trailer came unhitched, fell onto the road and began leaking gasoline.

Ritchie Highway is shut down from West Pasadena Road a little before Jumpers Hole Road.

Northbound lanes have reopened; southbound lanes could be closed up to four hours. Drivers are asked to avoid the area if possible.

The Department of the Environment is on the scene and is assisting crews.
