Filming To Still Be Allowed On Land Near Capitol

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says a Senate committee has matched the House by approving a bill that would allow continued commercial filming and photography on a piece of land near the Capitol.

Union Square is one of the few places around the Capitol where filming is allowed, and the future of commercial film-making and photography there was uncertain after the National Park Service transferred the land last year to the Architect of the Capitol.

Norton, a Democrat who represents the District of Columbia in Congress, had lobbied her colleagues to allow filming to continue.

She says she's urging committee chairs to hold hearings on expanding the areas with views of the Capitol available for filming. She says she hasn't heard a security reason for limiting filming to Union Square.
