GRANTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — Maryland State police have arrested an inmate they say left a highway work crew, stabbed a correctional officer and carjacked a motorist on Interstate 68.

Troopers say an inmate work crew from the Western Correctional Institution in Cumberland was working in Grantsville Monday morning when an inmate entered a van and stabbed a correctional officer with pliers.

Police say the inmate tried to drive off in the van, but couldn’t. Authorities say the inmate ran to the side of Interstate 68 and flagged down a motorist. Authorities say the inmate stabbed the driver, pulled him out of the vehicle and drove off.

After a 12-mile pursuit, the inmate, identified as 38-year-old Larry J. Johnson, hit a tree and was arrested.

The correctional officer and driver were treated at a local hospital.
