ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A bipartisan group of 19 Maryland lawmakers is planning to file a legal brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Maryland ruling that struck down a law allowing police to collect DNA samples from people charged with violent crimes and burglaries.

Delegate Sam Arora said the group plans to file the amicus brief Monday. They also say they support extending the law, which is due to sunset at the end of next year. Twelve Democrats and seven Republicans have signed on to a draft of the brief, which was obtained by The Associated Press.

Attorney General Doug Gansler has filed a petition seeking review of the Maryland Court of Appeals ruling.

Chief Justice John Roberts has indicated the high court will probably consider and may reverse the ruling.
