Md. Hosting Police Equestrian Championships

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) -- About 100 horse-mounted police officers are expected to participate in the North American Police Equestrian Championships this weekend in Maryland.

The event is being held at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg.

Saturday is the day on which participants will be judged on their riding. On Sunday participants will be judged on how well they navigate a police obstacle course. Sunday is also family day, which will include pony rides for children and a coloring contest.

A total of 24 different police departments are coming from locations including Michigan, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Officers from Canada will also be attending.
