HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — The Maryland State Arts Council is recognizing a bluegrass band, a steel mill and an almanac for their contributions to the state’s folk traditions.

The council said Monday it will present the awards Dec. 1 to the Carroll County Ramblers, the Sparrows Point steel mill and J. Gruber’s Hagers-Town Town and Country Almanack.

The awards are made annually to an individual or group, a place and a tradition that embody and help preserve Maryland’s cultural heritage.

The Carroll County Ramblers have been making music for more than 50 years.

The steel mill at Sparrows Point near Baltimore is to be auctioned in January following a bankruptcy filing by owner RG Steel. It opened in 1890 and was once the world’s largest.

The almanac has been published annually since 1797.
