UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A veteran Prince George’s County school board member has been living outside her district for months, violating a Maryland state law.

The Washington Post reports Rosalind A. Johnson confirmed that she moved from Laurel to New Carrollton in June to care for her dying mother. Johnson says she knows that state law requires school board members to reside in the districts they represent.

Johnson, 68, plans to retire from the board this fall. She says she didn’t step down from her position because she was still needed on the board, and there would have been no guarantee of who would be chosen to replace her.

Johnson was elected to the board in 2006. She represents District 1.
