BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A plea for information in the brazen beating of a young man–right in the middle of downtown Baltimore. Police say at least eight attackers went after him, in broad daylight.

Kai Jackson talks with the victim’s relatives, as he clings to life at Shock Trauma.

Each day he survives is a victory for 32-year-old John Mason.

Mason, who lives downtown, is in a medically induced coma at Shock Trauma, after being severely beaten by a group of teens. Now his family talks with Eyewitness News.

“It’s disgusting to see this happen to a human being,” said Christina Jasi, Mason’s Aunt.

Police say the attack happened last Friday at the intersection of Lombard and Howard streets. For some unknown reason, the teens started attacking Mason, a tattoo artist who’d just had lunch with his fiance. A witness who didn’t want to be identified described the vicious attack.

“The guy was already knocked out unconscious. Then the guy sat there and held his feet while his homeboy just started stomping on his head,” he said.

Doctors tell family members if John Mason survives this brutal attack, he will have a long road to recovery.

“He’s had severe damage and I think the reality is that he will be here a long time,” said Jasi.

Police say there are surveillance cameras throughout the area. They hope the electronic eyes may have captured some evidence.

“We’re hopeful that some of this might have been caught on tape. We might have partial identity of our attackers,” said City Police Spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

Family members say Mason suffered three skull fractures in that attack.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call police.
