BALTIMORE (WJZ)—A 7-year-old is safe with his family following a dangerous carjacking early Thursday morning outside a day care. Baltimore police say it happened near Bel Air and White avenues in Northeast Baltimore.

Christie Ileto has more on what happened.

Daycare workers say it happened within minutes. The car and 7-year-old boy were nowhere to be found. Fortunately, he's safe now, but the man responsible is still on the run.

Carjacked outside a daycare. That's what police say happened just outside the Children Are A Blessing from Above Child Care Center on Thursday morning.

"It was really horrific," said Annette Tune, day care worker.

Officers say the suspect saw an opportunity to commit a crime and took it.

"Upon returning back to his vehicle, he had left it running. At that point, an unknown suspect jumped into the vehicle and took off," said Sgt. Anthony Smith.

With the 7-year-old sitting in the backseat, daycare director Vernice Smith says the father was frantic.

"It wasn't about the car being stolen but the safety of his child," Smith said.

Just two houses down the road, a witness says she see heard the car take off.

"A car just speeding down the street, and we're looking like 'What is he doing? Where is he going?" she said.

Officers say the 7-year-old was recovered at Hamilton and Belle Vista avenues, not far from where the carjacking happened.

"It was a blessed outcome that the child was able to be back with his parents, safe," Smith said.

The neighborhood isn't a very busy, and that's exactly why day care workers and residents say they can't believe this happened steps from their front doors.

"I've been running the daycare for 11 years," Smith said. "We've never had a situation like this take place on our street, whatsoever."

Police are still looking for the man who stole the car.

Officers say never leave your cars unlocked or running and definitely don't leave your child inside unattended.

Police say they don't have a suspect description, but they are looking for a silver 2010 Ford Explorer with tag numbers 828-M-506.
