PERRY HALL, Md. (WJZ) — Tuesday night, for the first time, WJZ went inside the school cafeteria where a special education student was shot by a classmate in August. Daniel Borowy joined community members at Perry Hall High for a blood drive in his honor.

When Borowy was shot, he needed blood. Now his classmates and supporters are rolling up their sleeves to help others.

They lined up outside the cafeteria at Perry Hall High School.

“I’m giving blood because I want to be able to help out with people that need blood,” said junior Hope Yang.

People like Daniel Borowy. The 17-year-old was shot inside the cafeteria at Perry Hall High and needed blood. The shooting happened on the first day of school.

“Went to Shock Trauma; was given more than 10 units of blood in the first day. He has made a dramatic recovery,” said Chris Lindsley, University of Maryland Medical Center.

That need for blood brought Borowy, his parents, other students and those concerned to donate to the American Red Cross. The disaster relief agency has seen precious resources like blood dwindle since Hurricane Sandy. Because of the storm, 375 blood drives were canceled.

“If we get a chance to support the hospital, support the Red Cross, give back a little bit to those that have helped us so much, we’re more than happy to,” said his father, Milton Borowy.

Borowy’s classmates feel giving blood is a small way that they can give back to others in need.

“I’m really proud of myself because I thought I’d be really scared to give blood but instead I like it. I think it’s a cool thing to do,” said senior Amber Kraus.

The University of Maryland says it will also hold a blood drive at the medical center on Thursday.
