WASHINGTON (AP) — The District of Columbia’s Department of Motor Vehicles says it was former councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. who requested that 10 traffic and parking tickets be voided early last year.

A recent report by the district’s inspector general said a former councilmember tried to get out of 10 tickets but didn’t name the councilmember. Thomas resigned early last year after pleading guilty to embezzling more than $350,000 in city funds. He is serving a 3 1/2-year prison term.

In a statement, the DMV says Thomas did nothing wrong when he asked for the tickets to be voided because councilmembers are exempt from most tickets while on official business. The DMV says it mistakenly failed to void one ticket, after which Thomas followed the correct procedure by going to another agency.
