Smithsonian Magazine Awards 1st 'Ingenuity Awards'
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Smithsonian magazine is awarding its first set of American Ingenuity Awards honoring nine innovators in media, arts, science and technology, among other fields.
The awards were presented Wednesday night at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. Smithsonian Editor-in-Chief Michael Caruso says the magazine is showcasing people who are shaping the future.
An education award is being presented to Sebastian Thrun of Google Labs for his innovations in online education. Filmmaker Benh Zeitlin and musician Esperanza Spalding are receiving arts awards.
Lawyer Bryan Stevenson is being honored for social progress after winning a Supreme Court case declaring life sentences for juveniles unconstitutional.
Among the other honorees, Elon Musk of SpaceX and Tesla is being honored for his technology work. Geneticist Pardis Sabeti and scientist Jim Anderson are being honored in science.
