Detective In Md. Stops Shovel Attack

PALMER PARK, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County Police say a homicide detective followed cries for help and stopped a man beating another with a shovel.

Officers say Detective Mike Ebaugh, an eight-year veteran, was leaving a police station in Palmer Park Saturday night when he heard a cry for help. Police say Ebaugh got into his car, rolled down all the windows, and followed the sound.

Authorities say Ebaugh heard the sound of metal hitting something, and saw a man strike another man in the head with a shovel.

Police say Ebaugh drew his handgun and ordered the man to stop. The man surrendered.

The victim was taken to a hospital.

David Hamilton, 48, of Palmer Park has been charged with assault.
