Ex-Sheriff's Department Commander Pleads Guilty

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) -- The former commander of the Criminal Investigations Division of the Carroll County Sheriff's Department has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor misconduct in office.

Nicholas Plazio entered the plea Tuesday in Carroll County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to three years supervised probation, a $5,000 fine and 500 hours of community service.

The Maryland State Prosecutor had filed charges last week against Plazio, alleging he lied to prosecutors and gave false testimony in two related homicide cases.

The Daily Record reports that Plazio's lawyer, James Nichols, said Plazio had worked in law enforcement for 30 years and never had been in trouble before.
