Newseum Confirms 16 Layoffs In Restructuring Staff

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Newseum in Washington is laying off staff members at the museum about journalism and the First Amendment for the fourth time since its reopening in 2008, eliminating 16 positions this week.

In a statement Thursday to The Associated Press, Newseum CEO Jim Duff confirms the jobs are being eliminated in a restructuring. New positions are being created in other areas. Duff says the Newseum will eventually have more staff members than before.

Nonprofit tax forms show revenue has fallen short of covering expenses for several years. Still, the Newseum says it's had an increase in visitors each year. Admission costs $21.95 for adults and $12.95 for youth.

Duff says the museum will invest in being a must-see tourist destination, supporting teachers and in providing special programs and events.
