ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A group of Maryland lawmakers wants meat labels to list antibiotics given to animals while they were raised.

Washington County Sen. Ronald Young told The Daily Times of Salisbury that many people don’t like to buy meat from animals treated with antibiotics. Young says the bill he is sponsoring along with five other state senators would allow consumers to know what the animal has been given.

State officials say there is a waiting period before animals treated with antibiotics can be slaughtered. Delmarva Poultry Industry spokesman Bill Satterfield said the trade group opposes the bill. Satterfield says there doesn’t seem to be any consumer or health problem that would require the labeling. And it will be expensive and impractical, putting Maryland farmers at a disadvantage.
