BALTIMORE (WJZ) — New information has been released about how a Johns Hopkins gynecologist spied on his patients, taking video and pictures of them during exams. The hospital is now releasing new details about how Dr. Nikita Levy got caught.
Meghan McCorkell has more on this disturbing investigation.
It was a female co-worker who raised the red flag when she noticed something suspicious about Levy.
Multiple cameras were found in the office and on Dr. Nikita Levy. It was a camera hidden inside a pen the doctor wore around his neck that aroused the suspicions of a female co-worker. She told security the gynecologist was wearing it while seeing patients. The next day, security found multiple recording devices in Levy’s office.
In a search of his Towson home, police found extensive evidence, including hard drives and servers with patients’ pictures on them.
More than 2,000 former patients of Levy’s have now contacted city police to see if they were victimized.
Investigators are working with federal authorities to determine what the doctor did with the images.
“Looking to see if perhaps Dr. Levy sold this material online, if he partnered with anyone else,” said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
Two lawsuits have already been filed against Johns Hopkins, claiming the hospital failed to protect its patients.
“How is it Dr. Levy was photographing and videotaping these patients of his in an open and obvious manner such that an employee could see that? How did Johns Hopkins miss this over what appears to be a number of years?” said attorney Jamison White.
In a letter to patients, hospital officials say, “Today, we stand humbled by the events and tragic circumstances that involve the patients and community we serve. We want to assure our patients that their privacy, safety and well-being are our priority.”
Johns Hopkins officials say they will work with the police to try to identify victims.
Levy took his own life after police searched his home.
