ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — An Anne Arundel County Councilman wants to give residents the right to bear stun guns.

The Capital reports Councilman Derek Fink plans to introduce a bill Monday that would allow anyone over the age of 18 to carry an “electronic control device” for self-defense.

Fink says he wants to give people an alternative if they are unable or unwilling to carry a gun. While some people may be intimidated by using a handgun, they could use a stun gun if they’re being attacked.

State law allows qualified members of the public to carry a stun gun if individual counties approve. In Anne Arundel County, only police officers are currently allowed to use stun guns.

The county’s Fraternal Order of Police says people should have training before using a stun gun.
