Many Anne Arundel Firefighters Live Elsewhere

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Sixty-five percent of the firefighters in Anne Arundel County don't live in Anne Arundel, and 17 percent live out of state.

That's according to data provided by the fire department to The Capital of Annapolis.

The county's professional firefighters work one 24-hour shift followed by three days off. The schedule allows for some to live far away from Anne Arundel. Firefighters live in Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. There's even one who resides in South Carolina.

But the arrangement could soon change. The county is negotiating with the local firefighters' unions to return to a one-day-on, two-day-off schedule. Union president Craig Oldershaw says if the change goes through, more firefighters may consider moving back into the county -- or they may just leave the department.
