5 Children Among 9 Injured In School Bus Crash In Ellicott City

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- Howard County Police say nine people, including five children, have been taken to an area hospital with minor injuries after a crash in Ellicott City.

Police say the bus was taking 55 students to Centennial Lane Elementary School on Wednesday morning when it hit a van, which then hit a car.

The bus driver and five children, ranging in age from 6 to 10, were taken to Howard County General Hospital with minor injuries. Two of those children have been treated and released. The van driver and two adult passengers were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the car was not injured.

Police say the bus driver, 63-year-old Samuel Stokes Jr. of Baltimore, may have turned his head to address the children when the collision occurred. He was cited with failure to control speed to avoid a collision and negligent driving.
