Typo Throws Off Prince William Co. Budget By $5M

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) -- Prince William County officials say a typo threw off the budget by $5 million.

County officials announced Monday that they will have to search to savings to make up the difference.

Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart tells The Washington Post it is "a lot of money but it's not insurmountable."

County spokesman Jason Grant says officials realized June 24 that they did not have enough money to pay for expected expenditures. After a county budget official used the wrong numbers to project revenues for the 2013-2014 spending year, supervisors settled on a $961.5 million budget, instead of $966.5 million.

Stewart says internal auditors will examine the error to ensure it doesn't happen again. Budget officials and auditors will discuss the matter with the board on July 16.
