WASHINGTON (AP) — A project that’s been combing through the National Archives for Abraham Lincoln documents since 2006 may soon end due to funding cuts.

The Papers of Abraham Lincoln Project is based at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Ill. But the archives holds the majority of Lincoln-related documents in Washington.

Officials tell The Washington Post a five-year, $1.4 million charitable grant ran out last month, and state funding from Illinois was cut by more than half. The project has an annual budget of $775,000.

Director Daniel Stowell says research in Washington would halt by next June without new funding. He says the project would retrench and focus on its work in Springfield.

Stowell says the project has uncovered new information about Lincoln and the characters around him.
