Officer Hospitalized After Being Stabbed By Inmate

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Corrections officials say a guard at a maximum security prison in Cumberland has been stabbed by an inmate.

The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services says the officer was stabbed several times about 8:40 a.m. Monday at the North Branch Correctional Institution.

Authorities say the officer's injuries are not believed to be life threatening and he is being treated at a local hospital.

Officials say the officer was stabbed with a homemade weapon by an inmate who is serving a life sentence for murder. He has been transferred to another facility while Allegany County prosecutors review the incident.
