Navy Recovers Crashed Jet Off Virginia Coast

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. (AP) -- The Navy says it has salvaged a jet that crashed off Virginia's coast.

The F-16 was one of two fighter jets from the 113th Wing D.C. Air National Guard that clipped wings during a training mission Aug. 1. One of the jets plunged into the ocean about 35 miles southeast of Chincoteague on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The pilot was rescued at sea. The other pilot was able to fly back to Joint Base Andrews, Md.

The Navy's Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 2 searched 10 square miles of ocean bottom before locating the crashed jet. Recovery efforts began Aug. 14 and ended Monday.

The remnants of the aircraft and its flight data recorder are being sent to Joint Base Andrews for examination by the Air Force Safety Investigation Board.
