UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — The Prince George’s County Council is expected to approve spending millions to cover the debt of hospital operator Dimensions Healthcare Systems as the company seeks to build a $645 million regional hospital.

The county council is scheduled to hold a final vote Oct. 1 on a plan to spend $5 million per year for at least five years.

The county would cover interest for Dimensions’ bonds.  The county council signaled unanimous support for the plan in a straw vote Tuesday.

The vote is set to come days before Dimensions must submit an application to the state to build the new hospital.

Hospital officials say they are taking steps to show Dimensions is working to show it can cover its $74 million pension liability.

The new hospital would open in 2017.
