A Woman's Touch: Maryland Ranked Best Place For Women To Thrive

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The best place in America to be a woman is Maryland. One group says our state has the biggest opportunities for high-level jobs, money and health care.

Kai Jackson has more on the nationwide recognition.

This is good news for Maryland and women.

If you're a woman, Maryland is a great state in which to live. That's according to the non-partisan educational institute called the Center for American Progress.

"I was excited to hear that Maryland ranked so high when it comes to women in leadership, in finance and different industries," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

According to the Center for American Progress, when it comes to economics, leadership and health, women fare best in Maryland.

"I lived here. I think it's a great state. I think it's very well run. I think it's a really good place for a woman to make a living," said Joelle Jordan, business owner.

The Center for American Progress ranks Maryland the number one state for women to live. Maryland received a grade of "A" when it comes to women having the lowest wage gap, high-ranking jobs and a low poverty rate.

"I just think it's wonderful for people, anybody, to have an opportunity," said Cindy Wolf, chef.

Wolf and her business partner own five restaurants around Baltimore. She believes Maryland has provided a healthy atmosphere for women entrepreneurs to thrive.

"As a business owner, I'm proud that, you know, we have wonderful staff. And it's just been a great place for Tony and I to grow our businesses," Wolf said.

The state of Louisiana came in last with a grade of "F."

Hawaii ranked just after Maryland as the second best place for women to live.
