SHREWSBURY, Pa. (WJZ) — Crushed cars and a tractor-trailer on top of a truck were all part of a massive crash on I-83 northbound, a major artery for Baltimore commuters.
The wreck happened just over the Maryland line and left traffic backed up for hours.
Meghan McCorkell has more on the chaos.
Police say a tractor-trailer rear-ended a vehicle. That caused a chain reaction crash that closed down I-83 for hours.
Twisted metal is all that’s left of 10 vehicles involved in a major crash on I-83 northbound near the Loganville exit, just eight miles into Pennsylvania.
“I had people yelling into the truck at me if I was alright. I said, ‘Yeah,’” said Jordan Calabrese, truck driver.
Calabrese was driving a flatbed when he was hit from behind.
“All of a sudden, you know, I just felt… I felt a hard bang and was being pushed forward and the truck flipped over,” he said.
Calabrese was trapped inside the truck and managed to crawl out a window. What he saw looked like a war zone.
It took emergency workers hours to clear the scene, shutting down I-83 North.
“I have no idea how to get home around 83, at this point. I’ll figure it out, though,” a driver said.
“Thank goodness. I live around the corner here, so I can just scooch around the back ways,” said Kim Hall, driver.
Taking the back roads did not help some drivers. At one point, traffic was backed up on I-83 all the way to the Maryland line.
“We’re driving back and I stopped for gas. And it’s just crowded, bumped up. It’s an absolute mess,” said David Pollock, driver.
Some drivers got out of their cars. Others were just trying to turn around to avoid the mess.
“I don’t want to be up there in it. So I figure I’ll try to take the bypass maybe,” said Don Wilds, truck driver.
As for Jordan Calabrese, he thinks someone was looking down on him from above to help him walk away from this.
“That’s what everybody said–that I had an angel on my shoulder,” said Calabrese.
Seven people were injured in the crash. All of them are expected to recover.
Hazmat teams were called in to clean up a fuel spill at the crash scene.
