BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore police department is receiving more than $1 million in federal funds to hire 10 new officers.

The funds, announced Friday, are provided by the Justice Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Baltimore is receiving $1.25 million in grants. Hagerstown is getting $250,000 to hire two officers, and Bladensburg and Seat Pleasant are also receiving federal funds to hire one officer apiece.

Rod Rosenstein, the U.S. Attorney for Maryland, says the grants will provide communities with the resources to improve school safety.

The COPS Office is responsible for promoting community policing and has awarded more than $14 billion since 1995.
