OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — The Maryland State Education Association has endorsed Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown for governor.

MSEA president Betty Weller, the board of directors and hundreds of delegates comprised of educators from every county in Maryland voted to endorse Brown at the organization’s annual convention in Ocean City on Saturday.

Brown needed 58 percent of the delegate vote to secure the endorsement. He received 71 percent.

MSEA, which has more than 70,000 members, describes itself as the largest union and professional association in Maryland. An MSEA panel decided Friday to recommend that the union endorse Brown.

Four candidates outlined their priorities at the convention Friday, including Brown and fellow Democrats Doug Gansler, the state attorney general, and Del. Heather Mizeur. Republican David Craig also spoke.

The organization endorsed Gov. Martin O’Malley in 2010.
