TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — Campuses on alert. A warning from police after two attacks on college students in just two days. Both happened on the same street in Towson, a major college hub with thousands of students.
Meghan McCorkell has more on the actions police are taking.
Investigators believe the same three suspects have targeted students from both Towson University and Goucher College. Now they have stepped up patrols throughout the area.
There’s a heavy police presence along East Burke Avenue in Towson after a terrifying scene Sunday night.
“We awoke to the flashing lights and screaming,” said neighbor Kelly Bates.
A Towson University student was stabbed multiple times as he was robbed of his cell phone.
“I really think these same assailants are targeting these kids and it’s really frightening,” Bates said.
Police believe the same three suspects robbed a Goucher College student Monday night on the same street, threatening to stab him.
“These suspects seem to be targeting people who are alone and who are not paying attention to their surroundings,” said Elise Armacost, Baltimore County Police.
That student wasn’t hurt.
The two attacks happened less than 24 hours apart and less than one block from each other.
East Burke Avenue is an area where many students from both Towson and Goucher live.
“It’s a lot of families and a lot of college kids so not a lot of trouble like that usually,” said neighbor Ryan Dumer.
It’s just off the busy York Road corridor–where WJZ found plenty of students walking after dark.
“After hearing about all that, we were kind of scared to walk back here so we have our pepper spray,” said Towson freshman Abby Bresnahan.
“I’m definitely walking with another person. I won’t be walking the street by myself,” said Gabriella Joyce.
In a campus alert, Goucher officials say, “We urge all of our community members to remain vigilant and take appropriate safety precautions both on and off campus.”
Towson University has also put out a crime alert warning students about the recent attacks.
Police have not yet been able to interview the Towson student who was stabbed because his injuries are so severe.
They do not have specific descriptions of the suspects.
