SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — A Montgomery County police officer is being credited with giving CPR to help save a 9-day-old baby’s life.

Officer Ben Crumlin says he was looking for possible drunken drivers early Monday morning when a car came speeding toward him, honking with its lights flashing. A man yelled to the officer that his baby wasn’t breathing.

Crumlin, a 320-pound former college football player, called for backup and performed an airway check, CPR and light chest compressions to get the boy breathing. An ambulance arrived shortly after. The child was taken to Holy Cross Hospital and started to breathe normally before being released.

Crumlin has been a Montgomery County police officer for six years after graduating from the police academy. He previously played football for James Madison University in Virginia.
