Woman Accused Of Posing As Physician's Assistant

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland's U.S. Attorney's Office says a woman has been indicted of charges of posing as a licensed physician's assistant, treating Medicaid patients and writing prescriptions.

Prosecutors say 36-year-old Shawna Michelle Gunter of Severna Park was indicted March 18 on charges of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and health care fraud. The indictment was unsealed when she was arrested on Friday.

According to the four-count indictment, Gunter forged a physician's assistant diploma, license, and DEA controlled substance registration certificate of a legitimate physician's assistant.

Prosecutors say Gunter worked at a pediatrician's offices in Centreville and Chestertown. Authorities say she treated about 200 Medicaid patients and wrote numerous prescriptions.
