Carroll County Exits Frederick Incinerator Deal

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) -- The future of proposed, waste-to-energy incinerator near Frederick is in question after Carroll County pulled out of the project.

The Frederick County Commissioners said Tuesday that the Northeast Maryland Waste Disposal Authority is allowing Carroll County to exit a 2009 memorandum of understanding for the two counties to finance the $386 million project.

Carroll will pay a $1 million penalty to get out of the deal.

Frederick County says the authority will try to find another partner for project. If not, Frederick County says it can exit the project at no cost.

The incinerator would be built in an industrial park just south of Frederick near the Monocacy National Battlefield. The National Park Service opposes the project, which would burn up to 1,500 tons of trash a day.
