Museum Eyes U.S. Flag's Meaning To Diverse People
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore museum has gathered dozens of artworks and artifacts to look at what the American flag means to the nation's increasingly diverse people.
A new exhibit "For Whom It Stands: The Flag and the American People" opens this weekend at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture.
The museum says the exhibit was inspired by the story of Grace Wisher. She was a 13-year-old African-American girl who contributed to the creation of the original flag as an indentured servant in Mary Pickersgill's house when she sewed the flag.
The exhibit features more than 100 works of art, documents, artifacts and photographs. It represents groups ranging from African-Americans and Arab-Americans to Puerto Ricans and Chinese-Americans. It looks at what the flag has meant through history.
