D.C. Area Kids Raise More Than $750K For Leukemia Society

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Schools in the Washington area raised more than $750,000 to fund research into leukemia and lymphoma.

The National Capital Area chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society said Thursday that students at 400 local schools raised $759,465 as part of its "Pennies for Patients" program. Walt Whitman High School raised the most, $68,518.

Students across the country collect change for three weeks in either February or March as part of the program. The society says more than 14 million students and 10 million educators participated in the program in almost 29,000 schools.

The annual campaign began in North Carolina in 1995.
