3-Year-Old Little Girl Dies From Injuries In City Drive-By Shooting

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Heartbreaking tragedy. An innocent three-year-old little girl loses her life after gunfire erupts on city streets.

Rick Ritter has more on the search for who is responsible.

Police say Mckenzie Elliott just turned three-years-old in May. She was shot and killed in what they say was a drive-by shooting. Her killer or killers are still on the loose.

Investigators on the scene and shell casings on the ground. It's the aftermath of what police are calling a cowardly act of violence that took the life of a sweet three-year-old little girl.

"I don't have the words right now to tell you how upset, how outraged we are," said Dep. Comm. Jerry Rodriguez, Baltimore City Police Department.

Sky Eye Chopper 13 was on the scene after police responded to a drive-by shooting on the 3600-block of Old York Road in Waverly.

"This is an outrageous act of cowardliness," said Dep. Comm. Dean Palmere, Baltimore City Police Department.

Police say it happened just before 4 p.m. Friday. A vehicle pulled up at the intersection and fired shots at someone standing on the corner.

"It sounded like firecrackers," said Patricia Taylor, Waverly Improvement Association. "It was like, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop.'"

Police say those bullets traveled up the street, striking three-year-old Mckenzie Elliott on a porch with her family, along with a 21-year-old female.

The female victim is expected to survive. Three-year-old Mckenzie died just hours later at a nearby hospital.

"This is not only a little girl, but it's a family that's being destroyed," Taylor said.

The tragedy is sending heartache through all of Waverly.

"It's just sad that you can't sit out on your porch," one resident said. "We got to show more love for each other and stop this shooting and hurting each other."

Police say they have at least one person of interest, who was wounded, and a vehicle of interest--both in their possession.

As for the ongoing violence, neighbors say they can't take any more.

"They got to stop it. I don't understand it," said one resident.

"We want the public to be as outraged as we are about this. And we need their help," said Rodriguez.

Police say they're not sure how many suspects they're looking for or whether or not the shooting was gang-related.

The president of the Waverly Improvement Association tells WJZ the mayor is expected to hold a press conference in the neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
