WEATHER BLOG: Sunday

Current surface map shows high pressure off the east coast providing our region with a warm southerly flow. A low pressure moving into Quebec is pulling a cold front draped over the Midwest northward. A secondary low pressure over South Dakota will move into northern Minnesota later today trailing a cold front through the Central Plains. The center of the 500mb ridge is off the coast of the Carolinas. A vort max moving up and over the ridge will allow for the afternoon showers and thunderstorms that will form just east of the mountains. They will move towards the east. We could see a couple severe thunderstorms. The thunderstorms should reach the I-95 corridor by this evening. The broken line of strong thunderstorms will break apart once they reach the I-95 cord due to the sun setting and the atmosphere becoming more stable. The biggest threat from these storms will be heavy rain, damaging winds, and some hail. The line will continue to the east into the first half of the night but only as a broken line of showers. Temperatures and humidity will be high today with temperatures in the middle to upper 80s. The remainder of the night we could see another spotty shower west of I-95 as a final piece of energy moves over the ridge. As we head into Labor Day we will a spotty morning shower with clearing out for a hot day across the region. Temperatures will be in the middle 80s with high humidity as well. Given the amount of moisture and instability we could still see a thunderstorm in the afternoon but it will be less active tomorrow than it will be today. Any showers and thunderstorms will collapse once the sun sets and the atmosphere becomes more stable.
